What Are Dry-Type Transformers?

The dry-type transformers can make the installation process much easier as they may not need any cooling oil. Besides that, they will not need any fire-proof vault. Its layer of epoxy can help protecting it against dust or corrosion.

As such transformers are meant for increasing or decreasing the current and voltage in any electrical circuit. Though you can get many transformers that can be liquid-type transformers, however there are many good reasons for using dry-type transformers.

Not only such transformateur à sec called in English as dry transformer can be economical, and also have safety features, and more efficient too.

Such dry-type transformer will have no moving parts, and uses temperature insulation systems which is environmentally friendly. The other liquid-type transformers will rely on certain environmentally taxing materials e.g. fire-resistant liquid dielectric or oil.

Dry-type transformers will not need placing inside of catch basins or fire proof vaults. Also, you need not place them in certain place from where you need to worry about the toxic gasses etc.

Being a safe transformer, you can easily place them either indoors or closer to loads, and will make your entire system much more efficient.

There can be many different types of dry transformers and you may need different models for different applications and environment.

Following are few of the common types of dry transformers used for different applications:

  • Open wound transformer

Just because of its manufacturing process, its name has been given that will involve “dip-and-bake” method. All the coils will be heated, also dipped in varnish at high-temp and then will be baked.

This process is called open wound method for making the transformer.

  • Vacuum pressure impregnated

Mostly these transformers are used for industrial and commercial purpose. These transformers are made of materials that can easily withstand very high temperature.

Also, polyester sealant moisture-resistant is applied typically with technique of vacuum pressure impregnation.

  • Vacuum pressure encapsulated

These transformers too can be compared with above type of transformer. They are made from silicon-based resin instead of polyester and this will create thicker coating which is highly moisture resistant, and also to salt and humidity.

Thus, these will be excellent choice for any harsh environment like acids, chlorides as well as alkalis.

  • Cast coil

These transformers are quite reliable under extreme weather and does not need much maintenance.

You can usually find them inside the tunnels or buildings, offshore platforms, onboard ships, and also at nuclear plants, production plants and mining facilities.
