The Petrol Party

Welcome to the Petrol Party homepage. We at Rule Hibernia feel that this country is currently in dangerous hands. The policies of the current government are keeping Ireland deep in recession. The single biggest issue facing Ireland today is our lack of competitiveness. There are approximately 450,000 unemployed and until we face and deal with the cost of doing business in Ireland then that figure won’t be reduced.

It’s clear that the government is being driven by the naïve and dangerous policies of the Green Party. They have disproportionate power within the Fianna Fail led government, and they have disproportionate power regarding the percentage of votes they got in the last general election. Fianna Fail are hell bent on clinging on to power and this stubborn policy of theirs is having a detrimental effect on our economy. Many Fianna Fail politicians have expressed disquiet regarding Green led policies but the overwhelming desire within Fianna Fail is to hold onto power at any cost.

Since the Green Party went into government we have seen many policies of theirs implemented, the vast majority involving various taxes and government levies. What this has done is increase the costs for businesses, and it’s increased the cost of living for all of us. Their policies are driven by environmental ideals that are quite simply not fit for the real world. But the really sad part is that they have done precisely nothing to reduce carbon emissions which is what their stated intention is.

In the 2009 budget the only tax increase was the introduction of a new carbon tax. While many thought this was a good idea and were relieved that the government weren’t going to go down the route of taxing our way out of a recession, we believe they couldn’t have chosen a more ridiculous tax to introduce. The carbon tax has increased the cost of everything, the cost of electricity, the cost of filling your car, the cost of everything in the supermarket. The carbon tax is effectively a blanket tax that will come out of the pockets of everyone and makes Ireland even more uncompetitive.

Those with an environmental agenda believe this is a good idea. We at Rule Hibernia recognise a fatal flaw in the current government’s environmental policies and want to spread the word. The fatal flaw is that as of yet we have no viable alternative to fossil fuels. Renewable energy is still incredibly inefficient and therefore a lot more expensive. The long term future may be renewable energy but right now we rely on cheaper fossil fuels to provide power. And what this country needs more than anything right now is to become cheaper. We have to make it cheaper to do business here and the cost of energy makes up a significant proportion for almost every business.

By reducing energy costs we reduce the cost of doing business. By reducing the cost of business, we reduce the cost of the end product, be that computer chips, pharmaceuticals or your breakfast cereal. This will boost our attractiveness to foreign companies, and also enable native businesses to thrive, a combination that will provide us with the ultimate solution to the biggest issue facing Ireland today; unemployment.

A huge reduction in taxation of fossil fuels forms the core of the Petrol Party. It’s a radical policy that will immediately transform Ireland from one of the most expensive countries to do business in, into the most competitive country in Western Europe. A recent article we wrote exposes the flaws of introducing taxation as a means of reducing carbon emissions. Carbon tax stifles business.

Policies such as the recent 5% levy on electricity have the effect of making it even harder for businesses to continue to survive and do absolutely nothing to reduce carbon emissions.

It’s on the back of all this that we have decided to establish a new political party, The Petrol Party. Our manifesto details the policies we believe must be introduced to take Ireland out of the recession we find ourselves in.

We can’t sit around and let the current government slowly destroy this country. We must stand up now and fight for the sensible and necessary policies we need to implement.
