Lady Gaga isn’t straying far from the public eye. Or from her love of meat. Last Monday Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta gave a self-written speech to a crowd in Maine, U.S.A about the evils of discriminating against openly gay US soldiers. As it happened, the speech wasn’t sufficient to change the minds of the two Republican senators in Maine to support the repeal of DADT. The latter being the Pentagon policy “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” where gays can join the US military so long as they never mention their sexuality. A ridiculous law that should rightfully be opposed on grounds of discrimination and cutting the available pool of recruits.
So what did Gaga actually say? Apparently liberty is prime rib, which gays variously can’t partake of or have to pay extra for. She loudly suggested that straight soldiers who couldn’t tolerate gay colleagues be themselves thrown out of the military. She made a hell of a lot of meat analogies. Equality is “the prime rib of America” which gays variously can’t partake of or have to pay extra for. Plus an unsubtle reference to her recent wearing of a meat dress (strips of sirloin, mmm). The meat line is not a precise or coherent analogy, but let’s face it, it tops a bunch of dull statistics. The speech had the single most important ingredient for success on US media – passion. There’s not much doubt Gaga cares about this particular issue and by heck she’s going to draw attention to it.
